Product Description

Cast iron's properties make it the most common material used by municipalities for grates and manhole covers. In these cases, most cast iron is called gray cast iron. Like steel, gray cast iron is very strong. It provides greater vibration damping than steel, which is useful for hardscapes where traffic vibrations can affect concrete. Cast iron also does not deform under compression. It is strong even under heavy loads.
Raw cast iron develops a rich reddish-brown patina over time to protect it from corrosion. Unlike galvanized steel, this patina can be re-formed even if the original layer is worn, chipped or scratched. Cast iron grates can also be painted, with black painted iron being a classic and unique choice.
